What is AGI—and what should a business do before it arrives?

Artificial general intelligence is usually discussed as a system that can perform across a broad range of cognitive tasks rather than being limited to one narrow job. The exact threshold is disputed. OpenAI describes AGI in terms of systems that are generally smarter than humans, while Google DeepMind has proposed levels based on performance, generality and autonomy. The honest answer is that there is no single agreed arrival test.

That uncertainty does not make AGI irrelevant to business. It changes the kind of preparation that matters. A company does not become ready by buying every new AI tool. It becomes ready by knowing how work enters the business, what information is trusted, who can approve a decision and what evidence proves that an action succeeded.

Most businesses still have a more immediate constraint: enquiries, customer records, follow-up, delivery and management reporting live in different places. More capable intelligence will not automatically repair that fragmentation. It may simply execute the confusion faster. Business truth must therefore come before machine speed.

Klarnow's view is practical. Use today's agents for bounded work with visible value: capture an enquiry, qualify a need, prepare a follow-up, book an approved slot or update a controlled record. Keep exceptions, sensitive decisions and new commitments under human authority. Measure the result before expanding the agent's permissions.

The companies that benefit most from increasingly general AI will not necessarily be those with the most tools. They will be the ones with the clearest operating context. Their people will know what the business is trying to achieve, their systems will know what is allowed and their leadership will be able to see what happened.
